At Industrial Roofing, we understand the unique challenges that come with working on heritage properties, and we were proud to be selected for the task of replacing a roof of Hoover House at the Markham Museum. This historic building had been experiencing ongoing roof issues, so the City of Markham decided it was time for a much-needed replacement.
After a competitive bid process, we were honoured to be chosen as the successful roof contractor to handle the job. When we began the project, it quickly became clear that there was more work to be done than initially expected. While removing the old cedar shake roofing, we discovered the chimney was in really poor condition. We recommended to the city that the chimney also be rebuilt to help improve the building’s structural integrity.
After removing the old cedar shakes down to the wood deck, we carefully installed a fully adhered ice and water shield. This was followed by the addition of a cedar breather, which helps to protect the new roof from moisture buildup. The new cedar shakes were installed with stainless steel nails to prevent rust corrosion. This entire process gave the roof a new lifespan of 40 to 50 years!
